Truly Unique Experience

Search far and wide and you’ll be hard pressed to find another freelancer with my sweeping experience. No matter who you are, I can help you. If you are a:

  • Large corporation facing an unexpected, hurry-up project, but your in-house staff already is pushed to the limit with other work, I can be your pinch-hitter, ready to step up on a moment’s notice. I have served as a public relations director for AlliedSignal, Inc., a Fortune 50 company, and know the difficulties of juggling numerous projects with a limited staff. When you call on me, there’s no need to ramp up your staff or take on a large PR firm and its outrageously expensive vice presidents. No farming out your project to subs, inexperienced subordinates or interns. When you hire me, you get me.
  • Start-up, small or medium-size company that has an immediate call for a writer, editor or media consultant, but little or no staff to fill the need. Or if you’re not ready yet to hire a costly PR firm. Having worked with small, growing companies, I know how daunting it can be to reach out to the media with your message. I’ve worked on both sides—from inside and outside of the media. I know first-hand what the media want and need.
  • Government agency, civic group, not-for-profit organization and the like, you’ll need someone who has covered them as a reporter and represented them as a public relations consultant and content provider. My clients have run from one of the largest counties in America to suburban villages, from professional groups such as the National Association of Realtors to communities fighting the expansion of the nation’s busiest airport, from a state university to a social service organization.
  • Publication looking for freelance writers of in-depth articles and provocative opinion pieces with a conservative outlook, I have more than three decades as a reporter, editor, editorial board member and columnist with the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Daily News. My freelance pieces have appeared in RealClearPolitics, Wall Street Journal and other publications.
  • Book author needing an independent evaluation of the manuscript and professional editing. I have edited a book on leadership written by a top university president, a political biography, a corporate history and a collection of speeches given at a symposium sponsored by a public interest group. I have written a historical novel, Madness: The War of 1812 and its young adult version, 1812.

My writing is:

    • Clear. I’ve spent a lifetime making events, concepts and original source material understandable for the layman.
    • Fast. I’ve written under tough newspaper deadlines, sometimes three or four a day, unlike the average freelancer.
    • Concise. There’s never enough room in a newspaper article. My newspaper column can’t exceed 750 words. Writing short is an acquired skill.
    • Pointed. I’ve learned how to argue a viewpoint from almost 30 years of column and editorial writing.
    • Flexible and agile. I’ve done straight news stories and commentary. About politics and public policy. Science and technology. Business, transportation and urban affairs.
